IIS Basic authentication

Hey guys,
I have an application with Basic authentication enabled on IIS . It works fine in the test environment. The production environment is basically a workgroup , this computer can ping the active directory box through the ipaddress. I did provide the ip address for the the Directory security settings for the application on IIS.
But the production machine does not authenticate users when they enter the windows username and password. Can basic authentication work with an appliciaton on workgroup computer. Can anybody help?????
