Connecting to sample databases

when I follow the instructions on page 18 (Connect VWD to our sample databases) I get this error: an error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this error may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I am using Visual Studio not VWD, from what I read though that shouldn't make a difference. The only SQL Server I have installed was from the Visual Studio install. It is on my local machine, which is why I don't understand that error.
Any help greatly appreciated.
