Merging data from separate forms

I'm reading through Chapter 10 and was very interested in merging data from separate forms. I was able to use the "Absence Request Template" and follow the steps to merge the data from 2 filled-out forms.
However, when I try to merge data from 2 forms based off of a template I created, it does not work. Are there any special controls that I have to add to my data sources?
I did "enable form merging", and I did publish the form, so those aren't contributors.
