C# .net2 need help with datasets

Hi Everyone,
I have just downloaded SQL server 2005 express and web developer 2005. I have managed to follow all the sample videos so far and understood everything. The problem is that they dont show you how to get a dropdown box return data from a database and then aid in the insert statement on save. I hope this makes sense? I guess that I need to use a dataset and then return the value into a variable and use it in a parameter for the insert.
The drop down box is loaded by a database call with the name in it. The value is actually the contactID from the name. I need to use both in the new table so that I can display my data.
I am evan starting to confuse myself. I hope someone can help.
