Accessing a SQL Server Express DB thru VB Express

I have recently installed VB Express and SQL Server Express supplied with "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Starter Kit"
The installation proceeded successfully with no error messages. All installation and subsequent work has been performed thru a Windows user account that has Administrative Priviledges.
All the exercises in Chapter 2 worked with no problems but I have problems with the exercises in Chapter 3 - Accessing a data base thru VB Express.
When I try to add a new database to the project thru:
Project => Add New Item => SQL Database
I either time out or get the following message " Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance."
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
