Subject: Problem with creating SQL Project Time Tracker
Posted By: Jim Dean Post Date: 7/1/2006 4:03:51 PM
Using VS 2005 Pro with VB, WebDev & SQL ProDev installed.

Instructions on pages 21 & 22 do not match the labels nor the functioning of the Add Connection feature ... and it is not possible to "add a connection" to a database that does not yet exist - at least as far as I can tell!

I succeeded in creating the SQL database by clicking on Create New SQL server database ... NOT by clicking Add Connection.  The book apparently assumes that the database is already extant ... but does not provide any download info.

If I have missed something, please let me know.

Thanks

Hi Jim,

on page 21 after the Figure 1-8, the text says: The steps in the following Try It Out assume that the physical databs, ProjectTimeTracker, has been created by you or your DBA.... etc

You need to create the database on your SQL server before you can create a connection to it.

Hope this helps mate.

Yep you are right.

However, since this is supposed to be a *beginning* book, it would have been helpful if they spelled out the steps more clearly.

I am new to SQL Server ...

Finally I figured it out.

Thanks for your comment

FWIW, I've posted a step-by-step howto for folks who, like me, ran into difficulties at the bottom of page 21 and had no one else to turn to.  The steps can be found in another thread in this forum.  The link is:

Hi Jim,
like you predicted, I also ran into difficulties on page 21 and am grateful for the tips you shared.
