Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 - Chapter 6 - page 196

I'm walking through the Try It Out examples in Chapter 6 and I'm having a problem with the formating of the example of page 196. The code works fine but it is adding extra HTML from somewhere that is wrecking the layout.
I downloaded the code from your site and it appears to be creating extra html for the DataEvents.aspx page. I reloaded the code and tried again. Same thing. It is adding a span and br tag around each Item Template. This code does not come up on wroxunited.net.
I'm wondering what is adding this code. It is throwing off the layout on the page and I'd like to correct it.
