Is there a way to lick off a procedure at the expiration of the
connectiion timeout. Our users leave their applications open on their
desktops for extended periods of time, and we would like to close them
after the timeout.

Download Microsoft's form example database from:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/access97/sample/2/WIN98
/EN-US/FRMSMP97.EXE
This will give you an Access 97 database will loads of useful
sample forms in it.
One of them shows how to monitor user activity and then take
action if the application is idle. You could probably modify
it in some way to suit your purpose.
