access thread: Error Message @ startup

I get the following error message when I start access:
"Required Registry Information is missing and this application
cannot run. Please rerun setup to correct this problem"
I have done the install 4 times using the defaults every time with
no success.
Virus scan is disabled, no applications are running during the install.
Am not connected to a SQL Server during the install.
Any ideas?

This comes from the ReadMe file that comes w/A2K--maybe it's relevant?
