access thread: Setting up access 2000 security on a server

Message #1 by "Lloyd Swenson" <lloyds3@y...> on Fri, 20 Jul 2001 23:39:48
I set up access security (not using the wizard) from a "client" pc machine

on the network. During the process it asked where I wanted the (.mdw ? )

file. I specified the same directory on the server as the access database.

The server does NOT have access installed on it, by the way.

Anway, now access security only on the "client" pc I used to install

security. On the other machines on the network...the users are not asked

for their username/password.

It sounds like you need to take a couple of extra steps before your

database is secured:

1) Go back to your 'client' pc and log on to your database with your

administrators account. Open up the User\Group security window. Then go

through every object type (database, tables, etc.) and ensure that the

'admin' account and the 'admins' and 'users' groups have no permissions.

This will prevent anyone who is not using your security file from

opening the database.

2)Set up all your users to use the mdw file you've created. The easiest

way to do this is to have the users open your database via a shortcut.

You can then use a command line switch to tell Access to use your

security database (look up command line switches in Access help for more

details).

Everything should work now!
