access thread: Compacting made file larger

Message #1 by Miriam Engelberg <MiriamE@c...> on Thu, 13 Sep 2001 16:19:25 -0700
I recently compacted and repaired the back end of a database I created for a

client awhile back. After the process was finished, the file was even larger

than before! (It's in Access 97). Has this ever happened to anyone else? Is

there something wrong with the database that I should know about?

Thanks!

Miriam,

What size did it start out at and what size did it end at?

Yehuda

Miriam,

I have seen this happen too. The resulting database was larger (by just

a bit) than before compacting. I have not come across this issue with

2000 or 2002. My guess is its not the compacting but the repairing that

is causing it. Since you are working in 97 they are done as separate

processes. Try compacting without repairing (unless a repair is needed).

Maybe you will get better results.

This happens when compacting a corrupt database.

The database may appear to work correctly, but a fault with the file means

that it expands, rather than reducing in size.

Create a new MDB, copy all tables, code, queries, etc over to the new file,

repair and compact and all should be okay.

Regards,

Craig.
