Anyone found a way for Access 97 & 2K happily co-exist on the same machine and be able to select
which app to use?

Sort of! I'm not a total expert, but what I've found is that to have them both co-exist, you
need to be sure that the databases for each are stored in separate folders (preferrably a few
levels apart!). Also, don't mess with shortcut icons on your desktop. The best way to open any
of the databases will be to click on the program icon from your MS Office shortcut bar.

Tammy,
1. Install both in separate folders. My Office97/Access97 is installed
in c:\program files\Office97, my Office2K/Access2k is in c:\program
files\Office2k, and my OfficeXP/AccessXP is installed in c:\program
files\OfficeXP
2. Whichever Access program you want as the default program, install it
last. So if Office97/Access97 is your default program and you want it
to open any Access db by default, install it LAST.
3. If you want to keep your shortcuts that are created in the Program
Menu when you install the program then:
a. Win98 - Go to Start>Settings>Taskbar & Start Menu...>Start
Menu Programs Tab>Advanced>Programs. Create a new folder within the
Programs Folder. If Office97/Access97 was the first program you
installed, you might want to call it Office97. If it was
Office/Access2K, you might want to call it Office2K. Drag-n-drop all
the appropriate Office shortcuts from the Programs folder into the
Office97 or Office2K folder; whichever you created.
a. Win2K - Go to Start>Settings>Taskbar & Start Menu...>Start
Menu Programs Tab>Advanced>Advanced>Programs. Again, create a new
folder within the Programs Folder. If Office97/Access97 was the first
program you installed, you might want to call it Office97. Drag-n-drop
all the appropriate Office shortcuts from the Programs folder into the
Office97 or Office2K folder; whichever you created.
After you have done all the above, if your db is automatically opened in
Access97, but you want it to open in Access2K, just select the Access2K
link in the programs menu, then the db to open.
I hope this was clear, if not let me know.

They need to be installed in different directories...you can customize that
during installation. And, shortcuts can be made to actually use the correct
exe file needed to open a particular database...with a particular version of
access. If you need to know how to do that, let me know...I've got an email
saved around here somewhere that answers that question...came from this
board, actually :)

HI all,
I have worked with the coexistance of access 97 and 2000 for about 6 months
now. not only does it require seperate directories not it works better if
you do not include bindings during the install. I got a third party
appication the autoselects witch version I use . that made it much better.
double click file name and go.
I got it from www.aylott.com it works well.
Thank You,
Kyle Gaynor
