access thread: Where queries are used?

Message #1 by "Rory" <mcneillr@c...> on Wed, 12 Dec 2001 01:21:20
I'm getting a proliferation of queries, and would like to know where

they're used (especially if they're not!). Some are used in recordsets,

some in SQL (docmd.runsql ...), some as sources for combo/list boxes, some

as sources for forms, etc. Anybody have some ideas that could help me

here?

Actually, general help in cross referencing would be appreciated.

FMS sells a product that's supposed to do this sort of thing--I hear good

things about it...

I use the Total Access products and the Total Access Analyzer is superb for

your requirements because it builds a database about your database (i.e.

meta-data). There are heaps of reports and forms in the database but if you

think of any other angle you wish to follow, you can write the report for

yourself (after all the analysis database is an Access database itself). It

is fairly unlikely that you will need to because the package is very

comprehensive.

I am only a satisfied user and I don't want this to sound like an advert

for FMS. If you want a cheapo solution you can build a couple of tables to

hold data extracted from your Access system tables but you would then need

to do your own reporting and searching.

I have done the cheapo solution with Access v2 and I will bring it up to

date for Access 2000 (even write it in ADO if I can) but not until the New

Year - Xmas is closing in fast! Let me know if you want to pursue that path

- it's not a big job and I will find a use for it myself for some users who

need a quick and cheap tool.

But....do try FMS....they already have a great product. They are not the

only people out there - look around the Web.

Thanks, Roy & Joe. FMS certainly looks as if it'll fit the bill, I'll see

if I can find the money. Joe, I could update V2 to 2000 myself (ADO next

year?) and send it back to you if you're interested. How many $$ are we

talking about?
