access thread: .LDB file show user even when database is closed

Message #1 by "patrick slesicki" <patrick_slesicki@d...> on Wed, 12 Dec 2001 19:16:13
Hi,

I've a secure database where the front end crashed on a user. Now, even

though said user does not have the database open, the .LDB file shows

she's still logged in. What's worse is that she can no longer edit certain

records (I suspect because of record locking). How can I close this

instance of the application, so my end user can use the database to edit

data?

I run into this when users turn off their machines without properly exiting the Access application. All I do is log on again and
then properly close out. The ldb file goes away for me after that.

Have just attempted opening and closing it properly with no luck. By the

way I'm working w/ Access97. Any more ideas?

I ran into this. Is this an Access database being used over the

network? If so, this might be like my experience. I had to get a

server admin to track down the .ldb file on the server and kick the user

(which was me) out of it. For whatever reason Access locked my username

in there and refused to release it.

 Open, Compact then Repair.

Just another thought...

Can't you just delete the ldb file or is it locked for deletion as well.

Once it locks on a username, the .ldb file will claim to be in use. The

only way to resolve this is to get the administrator to kick the user

out of the .ldb file.

The directory/folder users need to have all rights except full control.

They need to be able to delete files, otherwise the lock files will persist

after the database is closed. We jus got through dealing with the identical

problem..

If this happens, ensure that all users are out of the system and delete the

.LDB file - it will be re-created when the database is next accessed. If

you have trouble deleting the file, it may be that the network has placed a

lock on the file - at my site, I do not have the access rights to clear

that but the network administrator should have - then you can delete the

LDB file.

There are various (free) tools available from Micrsoft download center to

enable you to view who is in the application (LDBViewer) which could be

useful to you if you suspect there is actually somebody in the database but

can't get anybody else to admit to it. Try

NOTE: ldb file is simply a text file that you can view by opening in

Notepad if you need to take a quick look You don't need any special

viewers...
