access thread: Records that "autofill" - Some help, Please

Message #1 by jviscomi@s... on Wed, 27 Feb 2002 23:17:42
Hi;

We just recently upgraded to access2000 and we have an annoying problem (I've never seen

it in access97).

We handle a lot of survey data so it's not uncommon for us to enter integer numbers, e.g., 1

through 5, over many columns. So if we have 10 consecutive fields we might get a record

something like:

1243511223, each integer filling columns one through ten.

However, with access2000 if we get a sequence like 123 anywhere in the 10 fields, access will

automatically 'default' the next field to 4 on the tab/return. Or, if we enter a 1, then a 3

access automatically 'defaults' the next field to 5. I've tested this and barring any validation

rules access appears to be ready to increment indefinitely after any two-digit sequence. E.g.,

if I enter a 4 and then a 5, access will continue to default, incrementing by one until a new

record is reached. If I enter a 4 and then a 6, access will continue to default, incrementing by

two until a new record is reached. Of course, these defaults will be checked if any validation

rules are in place.

Our data entry folks find this very distracting, does anyone know of a way to turn this off?

Thanks for the help,

Joe

Are people taking the 10 numbers and entering them sequentially into a text

box, or is the 1243511223 the result of concatenating 10 text boxes? It

would really help to know this.

The entry people are entering the data right into the table (sometimes there is not enough

time to create an "entry" form). So, Imagine MS Excel and you are putting one digit (e.g., 1, 2,

3, 4, or 5) in each column, say columns A through J. If I put a 4 in column C and then put a 5 in

column D column E will then be "defaulted" to 6 (which in the above example would be out of

the allowable range). Unless I break the "sequence" (e.g., change the 6 to a 3) access will

continue the default entries until I go to a new record.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Joe
