access thread: Database file needs to be repaired or isn't a database file

Message #1 by "Terje Nielsen" <terje@n...> on Thu, 30 May 2002 17:02:17
MS Access 2000 database.

After trying to repair the repair progres goes to aprox. 30% then it stops.
I can not reach data from the database.

Can someone help me with this problem?

If you have tried the repair using Access itself, the only other approach
I know (and it works A LOT of the time) is to use JetComp.exe. This is a
free program available on the Microsoft website (try Downloads section).
Search for wither "jetcomp" or "jetcu40.exe" (the name of the ZIP file).

This little program has saved my heinie MANY times!

Thank you for answering.

I have downloaded the jetcomp.exe file, but the same thing is happening.
after aprox. 30% the maessage "JETCOMP.exe has generated an error and will
be shut down by windows. You must restart the program". This is a windows
message.

Is there any other posibilities to reach the data from the .mdb-file. The
file is not crypted so i can read the data in the database with notepad.
Have someone knowledge about this?

Try importing all the objects from the corrupted database into a new
one, compile it, then see if you can compact it.

One thing I just thought of. Do you have enough room on your harddrive
to create a second copy of the database? When you compact/repair the
database, Access makes a second copy, calling it db1. If you don't have
enough room on the harddrive, it will hang and become corrupted.

If there is enough room, close the database and make a backup. Go to the
directory it is in and see if the .ldb file is still there. If it is,
delete it. Then try to open the db and see if you can do a
compact/repair.

Have you tried the following.

Open Access and when the "Access Database" dialog box opens, press the
Cancel button. We don't want you to open your database; we just want
Access open. Select Tools > Database Utilities > Compact/Repair
Databases. Then select your database when the "Database To Compact
From" dialog box opens. See if that works.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then go to Microsoft's knowledgebase
and search for Article ID #Q209137. There are more things that you
might try before becoming too exasperated.

Good luck.
