access thread: mde files and different access editions

Message #1 by "Clive Astley" <clive.astley@k...> on Sun, 22 Sep 2002 18:28:15
I distribute my application as an Office 97 mde file. Each user has their
own individual backend.

Now one user has upgraded to Office 2000 and cannot open the mde file. Any
suggestions as to the best way round this problem please?

I have now way of testing this, but have you tried converting your
original 97 mdb file to 2000 and then building a 2000 mde file?

Thanks for the suggestion. But I don't have 2000 and don't really want to
invest in it just to try it out.

Hmmm... one would assume that Access 2000 can open an Access '97 MDE
file. What specific error are you getting? If the error has to do with
missing references or a function that doesn't work because its library is
not recognized, you may have to make sure Access 2000 loads the same
libaries the '97 version does.

If the error is something else entirely, you're going to have to go to
that user's computer and convert your database up one version and keep it
handy for other users as more people upgrade.

Again, what specific error message are you getting?

Access 2000 can't open an Access 97 mde database. There's no workaround
either.

Here's the KDB article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?

Many thanks Brian. That seems to end any hopes of a solution.

Best wishes,
Clive
