Hi ,
When ever we are connected to the internet, we are assigned an IP. This IP
be dynamic IP assigned to one from the pool of IP from the ISP's IP pool.
Some might have a static IP which doesnt change and remains same. But
dynamic IPs are picked up from an IP pool and all dialup users will have a
dynamic IP which keeps chenging everytime as they connect to internet.
Now suppose, i am connected to the internet with my dial up connection. I
get the IP of my system at that point. Say it is 200.12.12.12. Since IPs are
unique, at that point ot time no one gets that IP. If i run a webserver on
my system, and if i try to access my system from a remote computer with the
IP 200.12.12.12, i should ideally be able to see the directory
listings(assuming proper security and access being provided). Right ? What
happens to me is - Whn i use a dialup connection and do the above said
process, i m able to see the listings of my computer from a remote computer.
But at same time when i use a DSL connection, i m not able to see the
listings. So there is something apart from the IP address alone which
defines theweb identity. Can anyone tell me what makes the difference.
In short - apart from IPs and DNS settings, is there any factor that
determine the web identity of a computer
with regards

If the IP address is in a public range, then that IP address is a unique web
address. However, if your computer is connected through a DSL box, it may be
assigning an internal "private" IP address.
Are you connecting the host computer with a DSL box?
