ado_dotnet thread: Installing Visual Studio .NET

Message #1 by "Lindsay Evans" <levansok@y...> on Wed, 25 Sep 2002 20:28:52
Hi everyone,

I was trying to install Visual Studio .NET on my Windows 2000 Server as
well as Windows 2000 Professionals.
The first thing it asked for was: Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Windows
Component Update.
The filename: Moreinfo.htm
Does anyone know where I can find those update components???
THe package of VS .NET has 4 CDs.
Does Windows Component Update come from one of these CDs?
Too scared to check what it has inside since the first one wasn't working.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Yes, the first disc should be the Component Update (well, at least it is in
my set).

You might get away by installing the separate prerequisites, like the
Framework, ADO etc, but somehow I feel you definitely need that Component
Disc. Where did you get VS.NET??

Hi,
Actually Visual studio.net includes 5 cds(includes 4 .net and 1 component update), U have to put first VS.Net cd then it will ask
for Component update CD.. Go to Microsoft site and download it or if u become member of www.learnvisualstudio.net they will send a
.net utilities CD which includes component update.

First of all, thanks to all of you for trying to help me.

Question/Answer to the first response:
I downloaded the stuff you told me from the microsoft website (5 MB),
something about VS. NET Framework Service Package but I didn't know what
it is supposed to do with the Update component. Does that contain the
Update component? After I downloaded, I ran the first CDs again and I
still got that message saying: You inserted the incorrect CD, please
insert the VS.NET for the update component.

Question/Answer to the second response:
These 4 CDs are coming from my company. I was asked to use the VB.NET for
my web application and that was all I got (4 CDs).

Question/Answer to the third response:
That appears that my company is missing 1 CD.
If this is the case, is there any way I can download the update components
from the Microsoft website???? Please specific because I am SO new to
this software.

Double thanks.

Hi there,

I am not 100% sure, but I think you can't download the Component Update
from the MS just like that. A while ago I was able to download it through
their subscription service. (If you have a subscription to the MSDN, you
can download the CDs from their site).

Somehow, I think that the Component Update CD is really part of Visual
Studio.NET, and not just Framework related. You can download the framework
(including the service pack 2 you just downloaded) for free from the MS
site so you can start creating / running .NET apps.

However, to install VS.NET correctly, I think you definitely need the
Component Update CD.

Go to your CD supplier and complain about a missing CD. I think that's
about the only thing you can do right now..... (or get an expensive MSDN
subscription).

Cheers,

Imar

Hi Everyone,

I was sucessfully installed the VB.NET package (I thought :).
I opened MS Development Environment for VB.NET.
Then a window appeared with Project Types on the left pane and Templates
on the right.
I chose Visual Basic Projects on the left and ASP.NET Web Application on
the right.

Then a path was created automatically for me in the Location textbox which
is something like this: http://localhost/WebApplication1. I replaced
WebApplication1 with Net506 so now I had http://localhost/Net506.

I clicked OK.

Within seconds, I got a new window with this error:
*******************************
Web Access Failed
The default Web access mode for this project is set to file share, but the
project folder at http://localhost/Net506 cannot be opned with the
path 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Net506'. The error returned was:
Unable to create Web project 'Net506'. The file
path 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Net506' does not correspond to the
URL 'http://localhost/Net506'. THe two need to map to the same server
location. HTTP Error 404: Object Not Found.

What would you like to do?
Radio 1: Retry using a different file share path
Location: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\Net506
Radio 2: Try to open the project with FrontPage Server Extensions.
******************************

Many thanksssssssssssssssss!

Please NOTE: This problem happened at work only. I installed the same
thing at home and I got it running so PERFECT.
