apache_server thread: append to error_log on restart?

Hi there,
When Apache is restarted, it seems to overwrite the error_log. Is it
possible to make Apache append to an existing error_log after restart and
if yes, how?
If no, does anybody have a script to automate to (graceful) restart of
Apache while securing the old log, for instance with a time stamp?
Thanks in advance,
Marc

Hello again,
Is there ANYBODY who reads this list apart from me??? I need help with
this problem quit urgently...
So, how can I make Apache either rotate logs after a restart, or append to
its error log, rather than starting at the top of its error log again?
Thanks,
Marc

We think the default behaviour should be to append the log after a restart.
This might depend which platform you are on though...
