Hello Stephen,
Thanks for your reply. This particular Apache is running on FreeBSD. But
we are starting to think that maybe the person originally responsible for
the machine may have been fiddling with some script.
The behaviour seems to be that it starts at the top of the error file
after a restart, but sometimes also leaves a 'gap' between new messages,
like it's using some pointer list... That's how my collegue describes it.

If I were you I'd reconfigure the logging from scratch! The Apache docs are
