hmm - it's a solution, not the one I was expecting, but it's
a solution. Must remember how to write a VB app as a service...
How about accessing the Exchange Mail Store? Exchange is on
the server that is exposed to the internet, so could I just check
my mail that way?

DUH! Since you didn't mention you have Exchange as Server I thought you
were running Outlook against an IMAP/POP server.
Sure, if you have Exchange Server you can install Outlook Web Access on
this box to access your mailbox with a browser. Unfortunately it doesn't
have built-in the WAP access but I believe third-party's (like
Fenestrea) do have solutions.

Aha! That rings a bell, time for some investigation I feel.

Ignore the WAP access bit - it's just another layer in the UI. If needs
be I'll just
rip of the OWA ASP/HTML code and convert it to WAP.
