asp_cdo thread: Simple CDO / CDONTS question

Message #1 by Adil Hindistan <Adilhn@y...> on Mon, 6 Nov 2000 16:00:28 +0200
If I have a W2K server with IIS5 and Exhange 5.5 on it, does it mean I can't

use CDONTS ? I bought the book from CDO Programming from Wrox. The very

first example advices to "fire up Visual Basic 6 and make a Reference to CDO

1.2 but, as I have W2K Pro on my computer, there is only reference to CDO

for Windows 2000, which as you might guess does not run the example in the

book and returns an error MAIL.Session not recognized (or something like

that). So far so much for the CDO!

I find CDONTS much easier but I can't use it because I have Exchange 5.5 on

the server ( I guess). Everytime I installed Virtual SMTP server, it did not

run + IIS stopped!

But it works fine in another W2K server (IIS5 no Exchange).

Any comments ?

You can install the IIS4 SMTP Service if you delete the Exchange Server

Internet Mail Service. After you installed the IIS4 SMTP Service you

need to re-apply the latest Windows NT4 Service Pack and Exchange 5.5

Service Pack. Now just add the Exchange Server Internet Mail Service

back and all your CDONTS created SMTP stuff will be picked up by the

Exchange Server Internet Mail Service.

Thanks for the answer, I just want to make sure I got it correct. So you are

telling me, first I should remove IMS and then first install Virtual SMTP

server and then IMS again. And If I do it this way, will I afterwards be

able to use CDONTS all the time! (It sounds worth trying :)

DUH! I didn't read your original post properly. Sorry! If you have Win2k

installed check first if CDONTS isn't already there (CDONTS.DLL in

winnt\system32). I'm not sure if so but I believe it is. But if not, I'm

not sure if the procedure I outlined in my previous e-mail will work

since I've only verified this on a WinNT4 machine (and don't have a box

to play around right now).

On NT4 the Exchange 5.5 IMS setup wizard recognizes that the IIS4 SMTP

service is installed and running and will tell you that it'll be

disabled and IMS will take over responsibility for CDONTS SMTP mail

delivery. If it's a dev machine you could give it a shot yourself.
