Are you maybe referring to the MSDE 2000?? which stands for Microsoft Data

Engine if I am correct.

Currently the .NET framework (in beta) ships with the MSDE 2000.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/productinfo/sqlcompdata.htm shows Enterprise,

Standard & Personal editions.

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/productinfo/pricing.htm shows Enterprise,

Standard and Developer/Test editions.

Here's an excerpt from an article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

"Moving or copying a database across various Microsoft SQL Server 2000

editions (such as Desktop Engine, Developer, Personal, Standard, Enterprise)

is a seamless process and is independent of the edition of the server as far

as the stored ..."

So looks like Personal Ed is still a distinct product, but I can't find it

anywhere.

hmm...

What I'm looking for is a free or cheap version I can run on my home pc to

migrate from Access 97, then serve it from a commercial webhost server,

where the webhost company owns the Enterprise or Standard edition. I'm

using win98, but would upgrade to win2k pro if needed. Any advice?

Mike

Although it is indeed very strange that they mention a Personal Edition

without supplying any more info, I still think you should take a look at

the MSDE. The current version is compatible with SQL 7, but a new version

(MSDE 2000) should be compatible with SQL 2000. I haven't been able to find

a download of the last on the Microsoft site, though, but it is included in

the Visual Studio .NET package.

Checkout the following articles to see if MSDE is for you.

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?URL=/library/officedev/odeopg/deovrusingmicrosoftdataengine.htm

Check out the following articles as well:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q274/1/99.ASP

The first line of the first paragraph basically says it all:

<snip>

Trying to install the Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine,

otherwise known as Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000

</snip>

So I think you'll need to look into the MSDE 2000 or the previous version

(MSDE 1.0, if I am correct).

Still don't know where to find it though.

Thanks Imar,

These links cleared up a lot of questions. It looks like MSDE will probably

do what I need and should be a good learning tool. Much appreciate your

help - this had me going around in circles the last few days.

Happy Trails,

Mike
