The book "Professional SQL Server Programming" by Robert Vieira is very

good if you want to focus on the programming side of SQL.

So this book doesn't deal with backups, performance (well, a little) and

other administrative tasks, but it does focus on the language SQL used in

SQL server.

I really recommend this book.

(The book got 5 out of 5 stars on Amazon. Read the customer reviews for

more backgrounders)

A great reference for your desk is Sams 'Teach Yourself SQL

in 10 minutes.' It's very simple, but if you're like me and

have a collection of four or five coding languages floating

around in your head, this is a great reference to 'remind'

you how to do something. I actually learned most of what I

know about SQL from this book, along with some excellent

on-line resources, such as

http://w3.one.net/~jhoffman/sqltut.htm (kudos to the fellow

list member who reminded me of that site!)

Good luck!

I have found SQL Server 7 Developer's Guide by Otey and Conte Published by

Osborne to be good. SQL Server (6.5 is the version I have) Unleashed is also

good.
