asp_databases thread: Uploading to SQL Server 7

Message #1 by srobinson@g... on Mon, 17 Dec 2001 11:32:19
Hi All,

Can anyone tell me what the procedure is to Upload my local db in SQL

Server 7 to a remote SQL Server 7 using Enterprise Manager and Query

Analyzer?

I am in the middle of a Nuclear War over here so any help to appease the

fall-out would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Simon

Not sure what you mean. Do you have to transfer a lot of data fron one local

dbase to a remote one?

The way I normally do it is (There may be a better/quicker way but this

works for me);(Best to do this stuff slowly and carefully)

1) Run a back up of all your important Data!!!!!!

2) make sure there is an appropriate account on the remote SQL server

3) generate SQL scripts on local machine (This will also generate stored

procs) (Right click dbase/Task/All Tasks/Generate SQL scripts

4) When you run SQL scripts on remote machine it will overwrite existing

tables with the same name as the one you are creating. It is good to be

aware of this

5) Upload/FTP/Move new SQL scripts to remote machine

6) Run them in query analyser

7) You can them export your date using one of the wizards or create your own

DTS

Thanks

Am I right in saying that in order to connect to the remote SQL Server,

I type in the servers IP in Registration on Enterprise Manager? The

problem I am having is that my ISP says that the public IP is open but I

keep getting a connection failed error message.

Can any one help?

Use this method which can prove very fast... but it requires

"ftp - for file transfer"

"PCAnywhere - for exectuting osql commands"

assume your database name is "testdb"

1. stop the MSSQL server so that you can copy the database files...

2. when you go to mssql7/binn/data folder you can see two files which will be

testdb.mdf and testdb_log.ldf or somewhat similar to this..... which will

contain all the data and structure of the db

3. just ftp them into the remote server

4. login to the remote server.. place the 2 files in mssql7/binn/data directory in

the remote server

let username of the database = "usrname"

password = "pwd"

Run this commands from command prompt:

c:> Osql -U usrname -P pwd (enter)

by doint the above you will get osql prompt

>sp_attach_db testdb,[this is database name] "testdb.mdf","testdb_log.LDF" (enter)

>successfully attach the database testdb

After you see the message like this your job is done

entire data with complete structure is transferred...

Hope this might save your time....

I think there's a way to export/inport data between sql servers...I

believe you click on the database in question, goto all tasks, and

export on the machine with the data to copy. You must have an

appropriate user account to use on the remote server you're exporting

to, sa works. Also, there may be an item under the start menu under sql

server called 'import/export data' or something like that.
