asp_databases thread: Technical Advice

Message #1 by "HOUSSEIN FARAJ EL-SHTEWI" <mfkhadiga@h...> on Mon, 09 Dec 2002 15:42:16 +0100
Dear Sir I know that MySQL as a database can be hosted on both Linux and Windows servers. BUT I have been told that ASP as a
Microsoft cannot be hosted on any WEB server EXCEPT on those, which are Microsoft based such as Windows NT server. So I do not mean
the conjunction of the ASP with MySQL, I mean the WEB server that would host ASP.  Therefore, Must the WEB server that would host
ASP be a Microsoft based or not necessary? Please confirm.     Thanks so much

There is a port for ASP on an Apache webserver. You can find it here:
http://www.apache-asp.org/
The scripting language however is Perl, so it is not possible to port a
web application that is written for IIS (with vbscript or jscript as the
scripting language) to an Apache server without rewriting your code.
The technique that is used for writing dynamic web applications on
Linux with an Apache webserver is PHP.
There are lots of articles on the web that describe the differences and
similarities between the two "languages".

Regards,

Gerhard Wentink

While you are true to state that ASP is microsoft technology and runs
on
microsoft centric platforms, it might not be entirely true that ASP
can't be
run on other platforms, ASP applications can also run on Linux with
ChillyASP loaded. It works great in conjuction with MySQL. You can
search
for chilli asp on google.com

Hi Gerhard

I have been told that ASP provides an Active Server Pages port to the Apache Web Server BUT with Perl scripting only.
Does this mean that I can run ASP scripts only with Perl? Do I need to use Perl scripts along with ASP scripts? Can you please tell
me what does that mean?
Thanks,
Houssein

Houssein,

There was something called chilisoft that allows ASP code (i.e.
vbscript) to
run on web servers other than IIS.
It has a new name now, but you can find it here:
http://www.chilisoft.com/

Well, have a look at the website I mentioned in my previous answer,
you'll find everything there.
Also try Chetar Kelkar's suggestion and look for chilli asp.

Houssein,
The ChilliSoft tool will allow you to run the majority of your ASP
on a Linux box with a little modification, no need to involve Perl -
although its a cool language ;-0
