asp_databases thread: Ability to print address labels through Intranet

Hello,
I have been asked to create a system that will allow staff to print address
labels for different groups of people through the Intranet. At the moment,
as it is a small company, staff create their own address tables/databases in
either access or word- but this means that everyone has their own source of
information and it is usually out of date. I have now moved our whole
employee database that was in Access into SQL, and would like all staff to
use this one source of information. Ultimately, the request has been that
staff should be able to, through the intranet, create ad hoc groups of
addresses and print these onto labels for mailouts. However, I know this
means me writing some sort of ASP/SQL based program- and due to my
restrictive time line, I wouldn't mind looking at other ways. However, if
the application is the only way, I'll do it.
Originally, my idea was to create a linked table in Access (that links to
the SQL employee database and therefore stays up-to-date) and give everyone
access to this source. The good thing here is that people can stay in Access
without having to learn something new, the address info is always up to date
and especially, is not hard for me to set up. The downfall is that, one, I
would have to create the linked table on each persons machine and two, I
don't know if Access can handle this especially over a network connection,
and potentially over long distances if our remote sites are to use this
database.
Does anyone have any suggestions, whatever they be I would be interested to
here them. It would be especially helpful if someone has actually created a
system like this before or is using one at the moment. If the suggestion is
that I do write the ASP system, please pass it on as well.
Thanks a lot
Neile

HI,
If you are using asp application then why do you want your users to learn
the SQL or Access database? When you make asp program to do all jobs like
printing address's and else things then your users should know how to
operate your asp program not sql or any others database. I hope this would
make clear to you if not do write more about your application.

Hello,
Well what I was pointing at in my e-mail is that I have not yet written the
ASP program. What I am trying to decide is whether I should put out the
effort now to write the program or just make it simple by just giving them
access to the up-to-date database from access or word, since they are
already used to using these applications already. Is this clear?

Neile,
I had to create a label printing system not so long back, although it was
for a proper barcode label printer, rather than printing from Word/Excel.
Although not the same application, it's fairly similar. I wrote a quick and
easy VB program with the Internet Control and had this application access
our Intranet. All pages are designed as normal, but taking into mind the
smaller screen size of my application.
The pages I made on the intranet allowed users to request parts of the
address file depending on their needs. The page that would show the results
was coded to dump the data onto the page as a CSV format. Nothing actually
appeared on the screen as my application would take the raw data and place
it into a listview. My application in VB then detected whenever the page
(results.asp) was called, waited for the download to complete and then took
the content from the page and put it into a Listview in my VB program for
the user to see. Once they were happy, they hit print.
It was easy to use, and surprisingly easy to create in VB. The Internet
control does all the work and provides all the events you need. All I had to
do was to create the pages for the Intranet and I was done!
As I said, probably not 100% what you are after, but I needed a polished
program which took away any hassle from users and I thought you might want
some ideas.
Craig.

Craig,
Thank you for getting back to me- much appreciated.
I hadn't contemplated using VB, I don't know the language. But at this
point, I'm open to anything even if this just gives me an idea of how to
approach the project.
Cheers
Neile

Hi,
If your users are comfortable at using Mail Merge facilities, you could get
the Intranet to create a dataset of addresses depending on their selections,
have it downloaded as a file (CSV) to their PC and then they use a standard
Mail-Merge template through a Label design in Word.
That might work.

Thank you for getting back to me- much appreciated.
I hadn't contemplated using VB, I don't know the language. But at this

Neile,
I had to create a label printing system not so long back, although it was
for a proper barcode label printer, rather than printing from Word/Excel.
As I said, probably not 100% what you are after, but I needed a polished
program which took away any hassle from users and I thought you might want
some ideas.
Craig.

Hello,
Well what I was pointing at in my e-mail is that I have not yet written the
ASP program. What I am trying to decide is whether I should put out the
effort now to write the program or just make it simple by just giving them
access to the up-to-date database from access or word, since they are
already used to using these applications already. Is this clear?

HI,
If you are using asp application then why do you want your users to learn
the SQL or Access database? When you make asp program to do all jobs like
printing address's and else things then your users should know how to
operate your asp program not sql or any others database. I hope this would

Create a system with ASP that lets users create a dataset - then they
download this to their PC.
You can then create a Mail-Merge file in a Label style for them. They then
open up this template, specify a data source (their downloaded file) and
they are away!
It's all theoretical - I've not tried it myself.
This way, you're avoiding VB.
One other suggestion - try going to Avery's website. They used to have
software that was free where you could create labels either standalone, or
through Word. It might have a data import facility?

Hello,
Well what I was pointing at in my e-mail is that I have not yet written the
ASP program.

I hope this would
make clear to you if not do write more about your application.

Thanks a lot Craig- yes, the hope is not to have to learn a new language.
I'll have a look at the Avery website as well.
Cheers, Neile

Create a system with ASP that lets users create a dataset - then they
download this to their PC. You can then create a Mail-Merge file in a Label
style for them. They then open up this template, specify a data source
(their downloaded file) and they are away!
It's all theoretical - I've not tried it myself.
This way, you're avoiding VB.
One other suggestion - try going to Avery's website. They used to have
software that was free where you could create labels either standalone, or
through Word. It might have a data import facility?

Hi,
If your users are comfortable at using Mail Merge facilities, you could get
the Intranet to create a dataset of addresses depending on their selections,
have it downloaded as a file (CSV) to their PC and then they use a standard
Mail-Merge template through a Label design in Word.
That might work.
Cheers
Craig.

Craig,
Thank you for getting back to me- much appreciated.
I hadn't contemplated using VB, I don't know the language. But at this
point, I'm open to anything even if this just gives me an idea of how to
approach the project.
Cheers

Neile,
I had to create a label printing system not so long back, although it was
for a proper barcode label printer, rather than printing from Word/Excel.
As I said, probably not 100% what you are after, but I needed a polished
program which took away any hassle from users and I thought you might want
some ideas.
Craig.
