asp_discuss thread: No longer able to use IIS

Message #1 by "Gary Hartge" <ghartge@u...> on Mon, 11 Feb 2002 15:10:37
Dear ASP_discuss,

The organization that I work for will no longer allow the use of IIS servers. I have developed several ASP applications

and need some help in offering suggestions on what my department needs or should move to in order to continue

with these applications, if possible. I am strictly in development, not archetecture.

Your help is GREATLY appreciated and I hope I get to use the three books I ordered from Wrox!

What have they replaced them with?

That is the big question. They have not replaced them yet, target date is

April 2002. I have some input and wanted to get some input from experts.

The issue is the security, or lack there of, of IIS. The server will be

replaced. I would like to be able to suggest something so that I could

continue to use the applications that have been developed. Possibly MS

Site Server??

Thanks!

We've yet to find an ASP engine that FULLY supports all the commands that

ASP on IIS does.

Chillisoft ASP doesn't quite get there, but is the closest.

So they just took all the servers and put them in a skip in the carpark and

set fire to them? That's the kind of managemnt focus on security you've got

to respect! To Hell with firewalls, eh?

Do you work with a bloke called "Dilbert", by any chance? Shortish, glasses?

Perhaps you should persuade them that a properly patched system (of any

kind) is the answer to your needs, rather than just unistalling something

because they read somewhere that it wasn't secure? Microsoft get the blame

for more lax attitudes to security than they deserve. Point out to them that

even the famous Apache web server got it name through its needing to be

constantly patched for security holes. Crackers will still home in on a

badly patched Apache like flies around a dieing animal... I understand they

think there's more glory in it.

Well that is pretty much what they would like to do. (Set them on fire that is) It isn't a done deal
yet, but it is similar

to a deadman walking.

I thank you and everyone for ALL of the responses and help. I will use the arguments you supplied and the old

"money issue" to explain what it would take to reprogram all of these applications on a system that may not offer any

more security than what we have now.

Thanks again!
