asp_discuss thread: Help for Graduate

Message #1 by "Ryan Stephens" <ryans@h...> on Wed, 3 Apr 2002 12:06:30 +0100
Hello All,

I'm a grad having one of those really annoying problems, when I link to a
word or exel document opening in a new window. Amsgbox apears saying Please
enter your authentication information. When the cancel button is pressed it
disapears, it only happens on word and exel documents, e.g. not word
powerpoint or text docs

I'm running IIS on win 2000 have given Eveyrone and IUSR full control over
the folder (for testing).

can any help or point me in the wright direction PLEASE??

Office 97 defaulted to opening documents over the internet as READ. Office
2000 and later defaults to opening documents over the internet as
READ/WRITE. Since the anonymous account usually doesn't have write
privileges, a dialog pops up. If the user cancels out of this dialog, the
file still opens, but read-only. This is a problem with Office, and not
with anything you're doing (and the behavior may vary across different
Office applications - it may not be like this for powerpoint). I'm sure
there are several Microsoft KBs on the topic, but last I checked the fix is
user education of how Office behaves.

Steve
