asp_discuss thread: How can I protect my asp files from being reused when a new company takes over?

Message #1 by "Matt Duncan-Jones" <matt@t...> on Wed, 20 Nov 2002 12:33:27
Hello

Has anyone got any ideas on how i can stop my code being disected ?

a new company is taking over our contract, I've written hundreds of pages.
some of which I'm very proud of, I don't want to hand them over
unprotected.

We did look at changing them to IIS app DLLs but when you deploy them you
have to install a higher version of MDAC which stops alot of stuff we've
got working.

any ideas or software solutions would be great

regards

Matt

Hi Matt tricky one this......

but I've found a fantastic app call HTML Guardian, it will do all that you
need!

That's great thanks Matt

No problem Matt

It's a shame no one else had any Ideas, even so please use this exceedingly
active helpful forum again.

Two things...

Stop being an arse and remember that people don't sit on this forum ALL day
waiting to help you. We all have jobs to do and we come on here to help out
others when we can.

Second - you've written lots of pages for your company that's about to take
over your contract?
You need to be sure that you'll not be breaching a Legal issue there. This
contract may have been signed on the understanding that your company has
agreed to hand over any source code, compiled or not - as part of the deal.
Make sure you're not going to get yourself or your company into trouble by
withholding code or securing it.

I'm sure a lot of us have been in your position at some point, and it is
annoying - but that's life.

Craig.

Fair point Craig

really I just wanted to see if anyone had read the post.

legally it is a tricky one, I don't think the contract would specify
anything about source code only the finished application, probably.
Plus it's my current boss (owner of the outgoing company) who wants to
encrypt his work, he's also keen that I do the same so the incoming
company don't rehash anything I've done and take the credit or reuse it.

I haven't really explained the whole situation too well, but as I said
the HTML guardian application I found is really good, it encrypts html, asp
and javaScript very effectively.

"... incoming company don't rehash anything I've done and take the credit or

That's also a fair point!

I totally agree that writing code for someone else to use and gain credit on
is wrong. I've been in that position before - watching copyright notices and
"we did this!" being stamped all over it and getting praise for something
that was done by myself.

Securing the source is worth doing - it depends on if you're wanting a
program that keeps your ASP secure when sitting on a server, being
processed. MS had a product (free, but cannot remember the name) which
secured your ASP pages, but still served and processed them at the same
time. As you can't really compile your ASP projects, apart from putting them
into a DLL/COM solution, raw ASP pages are not secure.

Good luck with it!
