asp_web_howto thread: PWS

Hello.
I'm currently using PWS to develope my site. I can't figure out something
though. When I change my home directory in PWS to something else and
choose another default page, I still have the original page come up. I
tried stopping and restarting, closing out PWS and reopening it - even
rebooted my PC, to no avail.
However, after a few hours when I try again, I now have the correct latest
default page show up.
What can I do to have PWS immediately show the changed default page? It's
driving me nuts!
TIA.

How is your Development Set up? I have PWS on my home machine, and have no
problems. I am using InterDev and using C:\inetput\wwwroot as my project
directory. So I am always working with the live files. And have no problem
with it.

Rita,
I use PWS all the time. I have no problems because I always create a virtual
directory to reference the site I'm working on. For example, I make a real
dir called NewCarSite, then I create a virtual dir with the same name
pointing to the real dir (note it doesn't have to be in the wwwroot dir).
Then on my browser I type http://localhost/NewCarSite and it opens up to the
default page in that virtual dir. Works great!
Give it a try.

Hi Roger.
Thanks for the response. I'm able to get to my new site as you described.
However, when in Personal Web Manager on the Main menu, when I click on the
"Your Home Page is Available At" http://localhost that's where the problem
is. It seems to hold the old information in memory for a certain period of
time (several hours at least) and I keep on getting my old page.

Hi Mike.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried putting my files in c:\inetpub\wwwroot
and still had the same problem.
I'm able to get to my new page by opening up the browser and then typing the

At least I can get to my new page now but I'd like to know if there's

this point but I would like to know.

Rita,
So you're claiming that you make changes to an ASP page they don't show up?
The old page shows? Well if it were an HTML page I would say it might be a
caching problem. Sometimes Netscape fails to load new changes too. Try
making a change and refreshing. Sometimes Java windows don't refresh when
they open previous ASP pages. If that doesn't work, delete/rename the
default file to produce an error msg (page not found) then rename/restore it
back. Other than these options, I can't think why your page would go to an
old page. Are you sure you're changing the correct file?

Hi Roger.
It's not changes that don't show up, it's a different page that I designated
as my default that doesn't show up. In PWS I change the default page (from
maurice.htm to rita.htm) and rita.htm doesn't show up. When I double click
on the link to my home page in PWS, maurice.htm shows up. I tried copying
the code in rita.htm, deleting the code in maurice.htm, and pasting
rita.htm's code into maurice.htl. Still got maurice.htm screen popping up!

TIA.

Are you using a standalone PC, or are you on a network?
If you are on a network with a Proxy Server, make sure your PWS's address is
in the Proxy Exception List of your browser

Rita,
So you're claiming that you make changes to an ASP page they don't show up?
The old page shows? Well if it were an HTML page I would say it might be a
caching problem. Sometimes Netscape fails to load new changes too. Try
making a change and refreshing. Sometimes Java windows don't refresh when
they open previous ASP pages. If that doesn't work, delete/rename the
default file to produce an error msg (page not found) then rename/restore it
back. Other than these options, I can't think why your page would go to an
old page. Are you sure you're changing the correct file?

Thanks for the response. I'm able to get to my new site as you described.
However, when in Personal Web Manager on the Main menu, when I click on the
"Your Home Page is Available At" http://localhost that's where the problem
is. It seems to hold the old information in memory for a certain period of
time (several hours at least) and I keep on getting my old page.

Rita,
I use PWS all the time.

In answer to Daniel - How would I clear the cache? I thought by stopping,
restarting PWS that would do it. Certainly by rebooting my pc. Neither of
those made any difference.
In response to Alex - I'm on a network with a Proxy Server. How would I go
about adding my PWS's address to the Proxy Exception List of my browser? I
checkout Tools, Options but couldn't find anything there about the list.

In IE5:
Tools/options/connections/LAN Settings/Advanced
then at the bottom of the dialog there is the exceptions bit, just enter
your machine name (separeted with a ; if there are others already there)
You can clear the browser cache (if thats what you're asking...) by going
into
tools/options(temporary internet files)/delete files
you can also go into settings and tell it to get latest version every visit
to the page.
You can prevent your ASPs from being cached by putting
<% response.expires=0 %>
at the top of the script. It seems to be general practice in the ASP world
to put this in every ASP. However, this should be used with caution,
because by doing this you are missing out on the performance advantages that
caching provides. If it is imperative that the ASP is run every time its
requested, then this line does need to go in. However sometimes an ASP may
just be getting and displaying data which does not change from one request
to the next, in which case it is a waste of server resources if the script
is having to run each time. So in that case you should either leave out
that line, or set the expiry to a reasonable time limit (you can also use
ExpiresAbsolute to specify an actual date and time).

IIS does cache pages, presume PWS works the same way. If you are updating
your ASP files with a program that makes use of FrontPage Extensions (e.g.
InterDev or FrontPage) then the cached copy is replaced every time the file
is updated. However, if you are updating your files directly with notepad,
then you may run into difficulties and have to do the whole renaming thing.
I remember this being a big problem in the bad old days of IIS3, but I
haven't experienced problems of this nature with IIS4.

Rita,
So you're claiming that you make changes to an ASP page they don't show up?
The old page shows? Well if it were an HTML page I would say it might be a
caching problem. Sometimes Netscape fails to load new changes too. Try
making a change and refreshing. Sometimes Java windows don't refresh when
they open previous ASP pages. If that doesn't work, delete/rename the
default file to produce an error msg (page not found) then rename/restore it
back. Other than these options, I can't think why your page would go to an
old page. Are you sure you're changing the correct file?

Hi Roger.

TIA.

My question is this:
When you Right Click on your page in InterDev and choose 'View In Browser',
does the page load correctly? Does it show all of your changes? If those are
yes, and you close your browser and re-navigate to the same page, does it
show the page correctly?
If you answered yes to the first one, and no to the second, you have
something configured incorrectly. You are either not editing live pages, you
are not saving to your web directory, or your files are not being published
correctly.
When your post first started you mentioned 'Changing your Home Directory'
and 'default page' what did you change it to? In PWS the default is
c:\inetpub\wwwroot\, did you change this? Where did you change it in, PWS or
interdev?

Using InterDev, one other thing you may want to try.
Get into InterDev and create a new project. 4 steps
Step 1...make sure it comes up with localhost:80, make sure Secure Sockets
is unchecked, and make sure MASTER is checked NOT LOCAL....Master
automatically updates, local does not.
After pressing NEXT a window should tell you it is connecting to the Web
Server
Step 2...Give the new project a name i.e. TEST and press NEXT
Step 3...Choose <none> for no layout and press NEXT
Step 4...Choose <none> for no theme and press FINISH
Window should say Creating Project File and Status Line should show copying
various parts such as script files etc.
If above works OK, click add item and pull in your html and asp in question.
If not, you have a bigger problem. After adding, if the updates work as
described by JstMeHr4u3 below, you probably created the original project
using LOCAL instead of MASTER.

just had another idea - sometimes for whatever reason interdev cannot update
the server automatically when you save a file (for example if your project

You can clear the browser cache (if thats what you're asking...) by going
into
tools/options(temporary internet files)/delete files
you can also go into settings and tell it to get latest version every visit

You can prevent your ASPs from being cached by putting

because by doing this you are missing out on the performance advantages that

requested, then this line does need to go in.

Hi Alex.
Thanks for all your input. When launching my web site through PWS I'm still
getting the original page that I renamed (so technically it doesn't exist)!
Since I now go through the browser and not PWS to bring up my page, I have a
workaround. It would be nice to figure it out though!

Hi Roger.

TIA.

Hi Mike.
Thanks for the suggestion. I tried putting my files in c:\inetpub\wwwroot
and still had the same problem.
I'm able to get to my new page by opening up the browser and then typing the
URL as http://localhost/rita.asp. It's when I'm in Personal Web Manager Main
menu and click on the URL there that the problem arises.
At least I can get to my new page now but I'd like to know if there's
anything I need to do to get it to work from PWS Main menu. No big deal at
this point but I would like to know.

Rita,
So you're claiming that you make changes to an ASP page they don't show up?
The old page shows? Well if it were an HTML page I would say it might be a
caching problem. Sometimes Netscape fails to load new changes too. Try
making a change and refreshing. Sometimes Java windows don't refresh when
they open previous ASP pages. If that doesn't work, delete/rename the
default file to produce an error msg (page not found) then rename/restore it
back. Other than these options, I can't think why your page would go to an
old page. Are you sure you're changing the correct file?

In answer to Daniel - How would I clear the cache? I thought by stopping,
restarting PWS that would do it. Certainly by rebooting my pc. Neither of
those made any difference.
In response to Alex - I'm on a network with a Proxy Server. How would I go
about adding my PWS's address to the Proxy Exception List of my browser? I
checkout Tools, Options but couldn't find anything there about the list.

I think that the reference was to the cache on the browser rather than
the server in the first instance. If you are using IE, you can get to
it via Tools, Internet Options then select Delete in the Temporary
Internet Files directory.
