Is it possible to use pure code to send email via a web smtp server eg.
hotmail, or does the SMTP server need to be local?
I want to avoid using COM or CDONTS if possible.

Not server side... but you can do it client side with Outlook activex
objects, although it would only work for users with IE5 and Outlook
installed
