Does anyone have any asp code that converts Word files to PDF?
The site I'm working on allows users to have work-in-progress word fi
les
stored on the server, but once archived I would like to convert the f
iles to
pdf for viewing only.
Thanks,
Aaron

Is there any way to do this without having activePDF server? If not,
does
anyone know much about activePDF server, and would it be worth
investing in?
Thanks,
Aaron

Yes, there are other ways to do this. You could write your own program
to
do this, but I don't think you will be able to do it effectively only
using
a scripting language. You could buy Adobe Acrobat and have a manual
process
to covert the documents. You could find a program that does single or
batch
converts on NT and evoke that over the web using scripting.
The technical information on how to create a PDF file is enormous.
Look
here for technical information.
http://partners.adobe.com/asn/developer/acrosdk/docs.html. To me the
most
cost effective way is to find all the third party product that convert
word
documents (web or not) and then figure out how each one could be
implemented
and pick the best method for the purpose (web or not). Try looking for
any
programs that can convert word documents, then see if any of those can
be
evoked using asp.
I'm not sure how many third party products are out there. I've had some
experience using activePDF server, and it does work. You may not need
all
the products activePDF server offers. Not knowing how your process
works to
archive your word documents. You may only want their doc converter and
invoke a batch process twice a day.
