Hi Ian
Did you proceed on your problem.
I'm searching too for a solution.
The Saxon control of Visual Basic should be able to run under ASP script.
But I have never tried.
If you have found a solution please give me a notice.

Are you trying to access the serial port on the server or client?
If you're trying it on the client - it most certainly will crash - as for
the server, are you specifying the correct COMM port?
Is anything else (including NT services) try to access the serial ports?
