Thought I'd pass this along since it bugged me so much. I just discovered

my problem. Starting in IIS Mngr, in the Properties page for the site,

under the Home Directory tab and in the Application section, the Execute

Permissions were set to "Scripts and Executables" rather than "Scripts

Only". Once I changed this option everything worked fine!

Subject: [asp_web_howto] Cannot download files with .EXE extension with IE

5.x on an IIS server using Basic Authentication

I'm hoping this is an appropriate topic for this list, so here goes:

I am working on a simple intranet portal for our department that will allow

our IT techs to log into the page and access handy documents and application

install files. The pages are ASP running on IIS 5.0 with Basic

Authentication turned on and mapped to our NT domain. Between the server

directory permissions and SQL server permissions, I've managed to restrict

access to only our group of technicians. One of the pages provides a list of

linked .EXE install files for download, but whenever I click on their

respective links, I get a blank user/password prompt. I get an

"Unauthorized" page after three failed tries to re-authenticate with this

prompt. These files are actually on a separate server from the IIS box and

are accessed by a remote virtual directory. Thinking my problem was a

security issue I checked all the permissions and then changed the links to

various other files with extensions such as .INF and .MSI. These non-EXE

files downloaded perfectly! Is there a work-a-round for this problem, or is

my install of IIS possibly corrupted? Any input would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Jared
