asp_web_howto thread: Using FSO to access files on mapped drive

Hi,
I need a little help using the filesystemobject to
access files on a mapped drive to a different server.
I have 2 servers set up the same for redundancy. But
there are files on server 1
that cannot be placed on server 2. Because of this, I
need a way to access files
from server 2 on server 1.
My first attempt was to map a drive on server 2 to
server 1 (drive letter E). But the filesystemobject
will not recognize the drive letter. It says the path
is invalid.
I think this has to do with permissions. The
filesystemobject must not have the rights
to view a shared drive. Maybe it works in it's on
memory space without having rights
to view shared drives?!? It seems to be OK looking at
the C and D drives.
I have tried setting up virtuals that redirect to the
folder on server 1 with a sharename. I also
tried to redirect using a UNC and connecting as the
IWAM_USER. No luck.
I would like to make it easy and use the mapped drive.
Is this possible?
Thanks,
Mark

When I set a virtual directory and used a UNC and
sharename, I tried to connect using the "connect as"
function in IIS5 using the IWAM_USER account.
But, after I did that, I guess I must have messed with
the IWAM password or account and had to reinstall
IIS5. Wasn't a good experience.

But, you can GET the IWAM password using the vbscript command-line
interface. Not well documented, but it's a lifesaver in a pinch! (See
what you can find out about adsutil.vbs -- that WILL give you the IWAM
user password and other passwords that the IIS system knows about and
will allow you to change them).

Interesting. Did you change the IWAM password on the NT Server as well?
If they get out of sync (what's in the metabase and what NT has in it's
pwd table), nothing will work. They both have to be the same.

Owen,
I played around with both. And without being able to
reset them, IIS was useless.
Can I create a user on 1 machine to connect to the
other that is not the IUSR or IWAM USER?
Mark.

Mark,
Yes, that is the REAL question. Microsoft makes it darn near impossible
for the IIS process on one machine to access files or resources on
another machine. For security purposes I'm sure. We've resorted to
creating a COM object hosted by MTX that impersonates an NT Domain user
with VERY restricted privileges (i.e., can only READ a certain
directory, etc.).

Owen,
I played around with both. And without being able to
reset them, IIS was useless.
Can I create a user on 1 machine to connect to the
other that is not the IUSR or IWAM USER?

Owen,
So I see. I have senn conflicting information about
the FSO and it's ability. MS's website gives examples
of the FSO reading from a mapped drive, but doesn't
give any detailed information.
This is, unfortunately, a major issue that I have been
tasked with. If anyone would like to offer some
detailed advice offline, I would be most grateful.
Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
You might try creating a local user on the remote machine with the same
username and password (IWAM_<machine-name>) and then giving that user
rights to read from the share that mapped drive is using (again, use
adsutil.vbs to get the IWAM password on the IIS machine). That was
suggested to me, but we never did get it to work. I'd be interested in
hearing from anyone who has as well.

Owen,
I have never been able to successfully get or set the
IWAM user pasword with the adsutil.vbs utility. I
will keep trying, though
Thanks for all the suggestions.
Mark.

hi mark,
afaik its the iusr_... not iwam_... you should be giving permissions to.
If the file you want to read is on another nt server then the iusr_...
must be configured as a local account on that machine too (with the same
password) and given permission to read the file.
see mskb article

You might try creating a local user on the remote machine with the same
username and password (IWAM_<machine-name>) and then giving that user
rights to read from the share that mapped drive is using (again, use
adsutil.vbs to get the IWAM password on the IIS machine). That was
suggested to me, but we never did get it to work. I'd be interested in
hearing from anyone who has as well.

Owen,
So I see. I have senn conflicting information about
the FSO and it's ability. MS's website gives examples
of the FSO reading from a mapped drive, but doesn't
give any detailed information.
This is, unfortunately, a major issue that I have been
tasked with. If anyone would like to offer some
detailed advice offline, I would be most grateful.
Thanks,
Mark
