asp_web_howto thread: Why window.open does not work?

Message #1 by "cindy zhou" <czhou@w...> on Tue, 22 Oct 2002 22:08:10
Hi,

I have posted this message an hour ago, and I did get some replies. But I
tried everything I found so far, the window.open just did not work.

I tried other methods of window object of Javascript, like window.close,
it works fine. When it comes to window.open, the new window just doesn't
appear. Can anyone help me out on this issue?

Thanks,
Cindy

Just thought of this:
Try it on another computer with the same browser version. If it
works...save your bookmarks and resinstall the browser.

Thank you, Owen.

The pop-up ad blocker thing could be the reason. But how can I check if I
have one on my machine? Please help me out.

I don't think that's the problem.

I copied your line of code in to a test page.
Although the new window did open, there was no page
loaded to that window.

Cindy,

Is this what's happening to you?

Yes. Actually I tired everything I can find, and my pop up window does not
show at all. I even tried some online examples, those pop up window did
not appear either. So I am thinking sth must be wrong with my IE browser.

Thanks,

The best way to know if you have one is to remember that you installed
it. (Sorry, couldn't help it!)
Every popup blocker is different, so there isn't any way I know of to
generically tell. Another way to tell: go to just about any free
website (excite.com, iwon.com, etc.) and click around. If you do not
get any pop-up windows with ads after a few minutes of random clicking,
then you MUST have a popup blocker installed.

Hi,

Thank you all for the help. My pop up window is working now.

I did not remember I have installed any pop ad blocker. However, when I
surf some commercial sites which should have pop up ads, I cannot see any
of those pop ups. So I guess there must be sth wrong with my browser
(IE5.0).

I still don't know what is exactly the problem with my browser. What I did
is update my windows 2000 and download IE5.5 w/ sp2 then run my
application. It is fine now.

Does the pop window open at all?

On the code you sent, I was able to get the new window
to open, but it didn't load the page.

Yes, my pop up window works fine now.

Are you sure the page for the new window is in the same directory as the
current page? If you use

<input type="button" onClick="javascript:window.open('newPage.hmt')">

It will definitely open the newPage in a new window with default
attributes.

What did you do to get your pop up window to work?

Mark:

Well, I think I'd better explain my original problem with the pop up
window at first.

My problem was that I cannot have a new window showing up at all when I
click the button. Then I tried to surf some commercial web sites that do
have pop up windows when loaded. I found those pop up windows do not show
either. So I guess it is due to my browser -- though I don't know the
exact the reason since I don't think there is any pop ad blocker installed
on my PC. What I did then is download new IE version 5.5 and it solved my
problem.

I think your problem is different from mine. You have the pop up window,
but the page is not loaded, right? So your new window is empty or what?
Any error message at all? You may have errors with that page. Did you try
to load that page seperately (I mean type in the URL of that page, see if
it is showing.)

Cindy,

Glad to hear your problem is fixed.

As far as mine, it only happens with the code you
sent.
And the window opens, I get no errors, but the page
does not show.

It doesn't affect any other code, so I'm not really
concerend with it. Just didn't know if it was
something in the code that I missed.

Mark,
I had the same problem, it's because the page can't be found (if I'm
thinking of the same problem). Create a "hello world" page and call it
what ever file name is in the code, put it in the same directory then
try the code.

Scott,

I did try that and it still didn't work.

I have "show friendly http errors unchecked", and it
still didn't show an error. It looks like it loads a
page, but it's totally blank when you do a "view
source".

Like I said, this is NOT affecting any of my pages.
This is only happening on a test page I created with
the line of code sent in by Cindy.

Thx,
Mark

Mark:

Well, I don't think there is any problem with my code. The following is
the exact code I copied from my ASP page and it works fine.

<input type="button" value="View List" onClick= "window.open
('popList.asp','','width=380,height=280,scrollbars,resizable');">

I think the problem is the browser cannot locate and find the page for the
new window. Did you try to load the page seperately as I suggested in my
last message, i.e. say page name is "newPage.html", (just put "Hello
world!" on that page, like Scott said.), type in its URL, (assume the
virtual directory name is "webproject")
say "http://localhost/webproject/newPage.html", see if the page comes out.

Cindy

> Cindy,

Glad to hear your problem is fixed.

As far as mine, it only happens with the code you
sent.
And the window opens, I get no errors, but the page
does not show.

It doesn't affect any other code, so I'm not really
concerend with it. Just didn't know if it was
something in the code that I missed.

Cindy,

Yes, the page loads fine.

I am not sure what caused it, but like I said, it's
only on a test page I was using to check out the code
you originally sent.

As far as I am concered, it's not worth the time.

Thanks anyway.
