Hi Enzo,
We have just done a gruelling amount of research in this area. Basically
there are two ways to go, either apply for a "Merchant Account" from either
the bank with which they hold an account or a competing bank, or use a
third-party service.
If you get a merchant account, that means that your system will hold the
credit card details and process transactions, which gives you full control
of the whole process. The bank will have their own custom components to
handle this, which they will provide you with, and with full instructions on
how to integrate it into your system. The upside is maximum control and
flexibility, the downside is you will be responsible for the security.
The other (easier) option is to go with a third party provider. This means
that when the time comes to enter the credit card details, the user is
redirected to the provider's site. They handle the entire transaction and
return a status of accepted/declined. This system can be good for customer
confidence, as if they are not sure whether they trust your client with
their credit card details, they can be sure that they trust the provider.
So if your client stresses that they do not hold the customers card details
it is likely to increase the number of sales.
There is a large sliding scale of charges for a merchant account, your
client would need to research the best deal according to the sales they
anticipate - e.g. high sales go for high fees low percentage, low sales go
for low fees high percentage. The third party services are more epensive
natuartally. Also a merchant account can deposit funds quickly, but a third
party will wait 4 weeks.
I don't know what country you are in, but basically in the UK you can forget
trying to get a merchant account unless you are a well established business
with a trading history. So if you are a new venture you have to go with a
third party. There are US companies which are more flexible and willing to
provide merchant accounts to international customers, but they only accept
credit cards - no debit cards. If that is OK then it is worth
investigating.
Finally, when I talk about 3rd party providerS, i shouldn't be using the
plural, because as far as I can tell there is only one - WorldPay. All the
others that I have found are simply reselling WorldPay's services. So I
could have saved myself all this time by just telling you to go to worldpay
- but I wanted to fill everybody in on the bigger picture.
On the plus side, WorldPay is incredibly easy to integrate, they accept just
about everyone, and they even give you the option of rebranding their pages
so it looks like the rest of your site.

You can do this with Paypal, 2Checkout.com, revecom.com , and many
others . These are easy to deal with because they are all link based.
I would suggest for them to use a real payment gateway such as
Authorize.NET, or Verisign Payflow Pro. In order to use the gateway, you
will need a merchant account.
Check out one of our clients.. http://www.genuvia.net for information on
the merchant account. Tell him Rahul sent you.
