How are you all?  My name is Vickie and I am a editor on ASPToday.



We would like to start a dialogue with as many people as possible.



Can you think about these questions.



What is ASPToday to you?

What do you use it for?

Why do you use it?

If you could have one article solution that would be of great use to you 

now what would it be?



We want you guys to feed in to our site. In the future we plan to cover 

more ASP solutions that you need now, whilst also looking into the future 

with ASP.NET.  But you help shape this.



Any thoughts would be gratefully accepted.

ASPToday is a good site but gets very complicated to find what you are

looking for. For example if I was to look for FileSystemObject and the way

to use it correctly I have to go through loads of different areas only to

find that there is no set script to show how it is used and how to set the

upload or download path. This is the same on ,many items searched for.



Could you not have a section just showing the script usage instead of long

tutorials all the time that do not show you what you are looking for?



I use ASP for reference on scripts and ASP Commands.



The reason I use it is because I paid for the membership. However I find I

can have the answers given in a lot less complicated form on other free

sites.



An article of use to me has been declined by yourselves. One that shows how

a website running on an NT server can allow its members to automatically

have a folder created on a sub domain of the site for their use only,

allowing them uploads and downloads so they can place their own homepages on

the sub domain. Restricting file size and pic formats and the folder size?

Patrick, firstly thanks for the article idea.  It sounds good to me and I 

am unsure why we would of rejected it as suggested.  We will do our best 

to get an article like this written.  Do you know anyone (Maybe yourself) 

who would be able to submit an abstract on this?  



Secondly, I understand what you say about the search. It is totally one of 

our aims in the future to refine the serach facilities on the site.  Do 

you, or anyone else have any suggestions on the best way of doing this?

Is it just the search that makes this the case for you, or is it the 

format of the articles?  We are aiming to provide solutions for ASP 

programmers in the most appropriate way.  What format do you, and everyone 

else want to see our articles in?  Can we improve them to make them more 

useful to you?  Or should we consider having more separate reference pages 

maybe displaying concise references to useful scripts in articles or ASP 

commands?

To whome it may concern.

	I am a new subscriber to ASPToday.com and after reading the e-mail

concerning requests on how the site could be improved, I would like to add

that as the search brings back pages, and pages of results with both the

heading and a brief synopsis of the article it would be better if the user

could see only the articles headings and if interested, be able to click on

a button to view it's synopsis. this could either be done by returning a new

window with the extra information on the article shown within or having the

synopsis shown/hidden below the heading of each article returned.

Thanks for you suggestion.  Your idea makes a lot of sense as you are 

right, a search that brings back many results may be too long to take in 

completely, if covering the synopsis as well.



What does everyone else think?



I will pass your suggestion on to other team members and our systems 

development department and see what ways we can implement this.

I agree with the others, simplifying the search function could greatly 

improve it's usefulness since it seems to come back with a plethora of 

topics that are unrelated to what I'm looking for.  I will have to guess 

that this might be due to the fact that the entire article text is 

currently being searched.  This is sometimes good, but should be off by 

default - instead, a short abstract of the topics actually covered should 

be tagged to each message in the database and searched.  The search form 

could then offer the option of searching the full-text in the event that 

the item might be hard to find..



Also, on the search results screen - as others have mentioned, actually 

displaying the synopsis of each return result tends to make the results 

screen long and slow to skim.  A brief mode only displaying the title 

should be used.  Typically, I like to click through to the article and 

skim it to see if it's what I'm looking for, but I can see a full screen 

of results at a time in my browser instead of having to scroll.  This also 

helps to determine right away if your search keywords are right.



By the way: I think ASPToday is awesome, and think with some simple 

refinement, the whole site could be a real pleasure to use.  Right now, 

the search is it's primary caveat.

the other comments about the search. I almost always

find what I want but it is a chore. I have typed the

exact name of an article and recieved hundreds of

results. 

I would like to search on author name, date, and

title. I think that would help. 

Also, I think every article should list the components

and versions that are required in the article. For

example what version of IIS, IE, MSXML, etc.

I look forward to more interesting articles from ASP.

Thanks for the feedback.  This search issue seems to be a common issue 

that is coming up.  It is obvious we need to sort some things out.



I like your idea of listing the versions required for each article and 

will be sure to mention this to the team and find ways of implementing 

this.



As for authors search. did you know that if you scroll down the right hand 

nav bar and click the authors link you will get an A-Z list of every 

author on the site.  If you click on the name you will get a list of 

articles and tips that the author has contributed.



But I take your point of wanting to search for such information from the 

search facility and have some ideas on how we can make this happen.

A agree with the search part. Make it quick and easy by default and have 

options to specify the search further (searching on author, full article 

text etc). I would also like to be able to get a list of all articles 

sorted by ranking. Maybe such a list already exists but I'm not able to 

find it.

I agree...this is a great site, but it's becoming like Technet or 

MSDN...hard to find what you're looking for. I use 

http://queryserver.dataware.com because it catagorizes the result lists so 

I can sorta get an idea how all the results are lumped together. That'd be 

nice here too.
