aspx thread: Scott: What's an Up-Level Browser?

Message #1 by "Paul Litwin" <plitwin@m...> on Wed, 28 Mar 2001 15:50:11 -0800
Scott,

What's the definition of an up-level browser? IE 5.0 or greater?

Is there any way to customize what browsers are considered up-level?

Is there any way built into ASP.NET for Microsoft to change this as new

browser versions are released?

I know that there is a browsers section in the web.config file but is this

even used by the controls?

Thanks,

Paul

I know I am not the appropriate Scott, but an uplevel browser is IE 4.4 or

above.

I believe it has to do with what version of JavaScript the browser can

understand.

Message #6 by "Scott Guthrie" <scottgu@m...> on Fri, 30 Mar 2001 12:47:08 -0800
In Beta1 we had the rather draconian policy of treating only "IE 4.0

browsers" and above as "uplevel". The downside with this of course is

that the term "uplevel" means different things (CSS support, DHTML

support, Javascript DOM support, XML, etc). It also wasn't configurable

-- which made lots of people scream.

In Beta2 we have changed so that individual controls now look for more

fine grain browsecas support -- rather than just checking for whether

the browser is "uplevel". For example: styles will be rendered using

CSS if the browser supports styles -- independent of whether they

support a JavaScript DOM.

All browser support settings will also be configurable within the

<browserCapabilities> section of the configuration file. So as new

browsers come up (or if you want to tweak things), you can update the

browser capabilities to effect the output.

Hope this helps,

Scott
