aspx thread: Beta2

I'm now up and running with Beta2 - on Friday I did the conversion of my
work machine and the Guestbook. On Saturday I converted my WebPoll and my
web site at http://yyyz.net - this morning I converted my server.
I followed the same proceedure...
Uninstall VS.Net Web Controls
Uninstall VS.Net
Uninstall .Net SDK
Remove all directories
Clean up the Registry
Install Vs.Net
The server runs great and hopefully both machines will continue without the
reformat that everyone else seems to think is required. The difference in
speed between Beta1 and Beta2 has definately improved.
The Beta2 version of both the Guestbook and the Webpoll can be viewed at
http://72t.net - all the calculators at 72t.Net use COM engines and even
those calls appear to be faster. No changes to any of the code except for
the Sql, Templates and File object.
Thanks again for all your help!

I don't understand what you mean by "Clean up the registry"... There are
hundreds and hundreds of .NET entries... How did you do it by hand? This
must of taken you 20 hours or so...

Actually it took about 30 minutes to clean the registry. I used regedit and
started by searching for the 'Visual' entries and deleted the ones
associated with Visual Studio .Net - the I used Norton's Cleansweep to
identify a few more for VS and a few for .Net and deleted those. I didn't
count, but as you suggest there are lots. The time involved was
substantially less than rebuilding the entire machine. While I don't know if
it will always work, it seems to have worked these two times. One machine
runs Win2000 Pro, the other Win2000 Server.

Outstanding! I hope everything works out for you... I just spotted too
many entries as I started on my search for anything that has to do with .NET
&& || Visual. I deleted as many as I could (I thought I deleted them all)
spending quite amount of time as well and still got an error stating that
the Beta1 has to be fully uninstalled before installing Beta2.... So I just
go fed up, re-imaged my machine, and was done with it...

ASP.NET is NOT supported on NT 4.0 for Beta 2.
You need W2K or Win XP for ASP.NET.
...and please do NOT send the same message
with two different subjects.
We can read it just fine the first ( and only ) time you send it.
OK ?

Yogesh,
Supporting ASP.NET is mainly due to IIS... ASP.NET Beta2 is only supported
by IIS Version 5.0, which comes as an add-on for the newer Windows operating
systems. At a glance you will be able to get full functionality from
ASP.NET with Windows 2000 Professional (+IIS 5.0), Windows XP, Windows 2000
Server / Advanced Server / and Datacenter Server. Without IIS 5.0 you will
not have any luck running ASP.NET.
The reason most of the reply's are stating that ASP.NET Beta2 has been
dropped or discontinued from NT is because IIS 4.0 was the latest version
for that OS.

Nobody "rattled my cage"....because there's no cage to rattle.
It's not courteous to send multiple identical messages to
the same list server, which differ only in the subject heading.
It's a waste of time, effort and bandwidth to do so.
Why did my calling Yogesh's attention to that bother you ?
I did say "please"...and I answered his question.
Do you need/want to read duplicate messages ?
Or did that rattle *your* cage ?

How stable is the beta2 in comparison with beta1? And is the

Is there such a thing as an uninstall with beta2?

On a more serious note - getting back to ASP.NET stuff:
Does anyone know whether MDAC 2.7 is really necessary in order to run
ASP.NET Prem. Edition? Are all other existing non-NET applications
still
usable when installing version 2.7 of MDAC?
Cheers,

Since we are on the topic of beta2, I figured I'd throw in what I know:
The .NET framework (except for ASP.NET) is supported on the following:
Windows 98
Windows 98 SE
Windows ME
Windows NT
Windows 2000 professional/server and XP professional/server support the
ENTIRE framework. The home edition of WindowsXP doesn't quite support
everything (i.e. System.Web).

Yogesh,
ASP.NET and transactions from managed code
are no longer supported in Windows NT 4.0.
These features are now available only
on Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
The following namespaces do NOT work under NT 4.0 :
System.Web :
System.Web.Caching
System.Web.Configuration
System.Web.Security
System.Web.UI
System.Web.UI.Design
System.Web.UI.Design.WebControls
System.Web.UI.Design.Util
System.Web.UI.HTMLControls
System.Web.UI.WebControls
System.Web.Util
System.Web.Handlers
System.Web.Hosting
System.Web.SessionState
System.Web.Mail
System.EnterpriseServices
System.Messaging :
Message.Transaction.Id
Message.Transaction.IsLastInTransaction
Message.Transaction.IsFirstInTransaction
Everything else will work under NT 4.0.
I wouldn't waste my time developing for NT 4.0.
Support for NT 4.0 may be reinstated once the product releases,
but I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for that to happen.
Get yourself W2K, [ Server or Pro ]
...or Windows XP [ Home or Windows.NET ] ( still in beta... )
best,
Juan T. Llibre
