aspx thread: Next learning phase at the ASP/.NET crossroads

Message #1 by jmuldoon@q... on Wed, 19 Sep 2001 13:43:50
Question about where to focus my next stage of learning. I've picked up

enough VBScript -- from the three Wrox books I have and filling in the

holes in my learning from this forum-- to run some useful ASP Data bases.

I was going to get a better grasp of the VB world by taking a VB course.

My ISP just sent a notice that they are now offering .NET service and the

buzz about .NET is beginning to build. I have looked at the Wrox forum

on .NET and some other sites. I'd really like to know what the people in

THIS forum think about .NET, how it will help and where best to start.

Best book, maybe. Will the kinds of tasks addressed in this forum benefit

greatly from .NET? If so, where should we begin?

Thanks

Joe.

Hi Joe,

Professional ASP.NET is a great place to start, or even Beginning ASP.NET if

you don't feel confident enough to start with a Pro-level book. You should

note that ASP.NET is a completely new animal, and you will find that you

have to start at the beginning for a lot of things. The uptake for .NET is

certain to be huge: the technology isn't even released yet, and still

developers throughout the world are throwing themselves into learing about

it.

The first thing to do of course is to get the SDK from Microsoft. 128MB

download I'm afraid!

Matt

Actually you can download a trimmed version that weighs in at a mere

18MB - http://www.asp.net/

I'd highly recommend that you check out:

Sams Teach Yourself ASP.NET in 21 Days

	http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0672321688/4guysfromrollaco

It's a great place to start learning about .NET and ASP.NET. Also,

there are a gaggle of Web sites out there with free information on

ASP.NET:

	http://www.aspalliance.com

	http://www.aspng.com

	http://www.aspfree.com

	http://www.4guysfromrolla.com

	http://www.123aspx.com

and on and on and on...

Thanks for the quick response. I'll check those books out tonight AND

finally get rid of that 10 gig drive that's been shrinking so fast.
