I am pretty familiar with ASP.....but I do not know where to start with
ASP.Net
Any suggestions..(Books or Sites)...other than the quick start?

Well, when Adeel Amad asked this question a day or so ago, Fredrik Normen
was kind enough to recommend our (Wrox's) "Preview of ASP+". he also
recommended "Introducing .NET" which (ironically) he's seen and I -
working for Wrox as I do - haven't! (he was a reviewer on it during its
edit :) ). The Microsoft site gotdotnet.com has a good many links to
resources, and my own links list has relevant specific articles on many
sites listed article by article -
http://p2p.wrox.com/topics/ASPlinks/ASPlinks.htm (although I'll have to
find some time to update the content available at Steve Schofield's site,
ASPFree... it might be worth going along there and just having a look at
what he's put up lately). There are also these lists, Charles Carroll's,
and the messageboards at places like 4guys.
It also depends which language you'd like to code in. I've got a copy of
our "C# Programming on the Public Beta" here with me, and it's looking
pretty good. I might start digging into this over the weekend. It's not an
ASP-specific book, of course, but I think this will be a good language to
learn. Why? Well, only a blind man would fail to recognise that the .NET
framework is going to throw Sun and Microsoft head to head into a final
battle to the death for supremacy over the eventual future of the web. The
loser will probably suffer a long and dwindling death, but the winner's
technology will reign supreme. Think about what this means for VB-coders.
If you know C#, then learning Java would be a doddle, but what if you've
placed all your hopes on VB? VB is so useful it will never go away,
whatever happens, but its implementation on the web might not be so easy,
if Java wins.
You've got to hedge your bets in this game. My suspicion is that .NET will
blow Java out of the water, but I don't _know_ that yet, do I? There's
nothing less useful than a coder with a headful of obsolete knowledge:
knowing how to work with the kernel of a PDP-10, or write card-reader
programs for a Sperry Univac is great for impressing the boys at a Linux
conference, or something, but it won't get you a job.

I'd be really interested on the reasons for your comment...I've recently
been watching a thread from an Internet Network List [FirstTuesdayClub UK]
which extoled the virutes of ASP/SQL with Linux/JSP etc... Basically ASP
lost due to cost, mostly, and the belief that Linux is more stable, secure
etc...
We're hedging our bets on ASP/SQL but would be interested in knowing more as
to why this platform is better? Perhaps I need a confidence booster that
we're doing the right thing, to young to retire :))
any thoughts, links to reports etc welcome, if anything some amo to fire
back ..
cheers
peter
