Well it isn't 200 or so messages :-), and yes Scott you are broadly

correct, except when you come to NT 4.0, I have heard (via another author)

from someone on the beta team, very recently that NT 4.0 is no longer

supported. You can only use Windows 2000 or Windows XP as platforms on

which to run ASP.NET on your web server.

Sorry, I meant to be more specific - the supported platforms that

ASP.NET

can be served from are:

Windows 2000 - Pro/Server/Advanced (etc)

Windows XP - Server

ASP.NET will work on all versions of Windows past 98 (including NT 4.0)

running either PWS or IIS.

Chris,

Not with BETA 2. The only platforms supported for hosting

an ASP.NET application are:

	Windows 2000 Professional

	Windows 2000 Server

	Windows 2000 Advanced Server

	Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

	Windows XP Professional

	Windows 2002 Server

	Windows 2002 Advanced Server

	Windows 2002 Datacenter Server

I am not sure about the Windows XP Home Edition, as I

haven't used it OR heard any solid evidence that is

supported. Someone from Microsoft might know more

about that.

According to Scott Guthrie of the ASP.NET team at

Microsoft, they made the decision to drop support

for ASP.NET on Windows NT 4.0 because it placed

an enormous testing load on them which would have

pushed the product release date for V1 out by

too much, and they felt that customers would

appreciate a solid release on Windows 2000/XP

sooner rather than later.

That's not what I hear from your beta group. Yes, they can have it

running

on NT 4.0, but they won't have the time to test it fully, so it won't

be

released on NT 4.0. I know it was the intention to let it run on all

these

platforms, but my contacts tell me this is no longer the case.

Mitch,

That's basically what I heard, I just meant Windows XP Pro, not

server. Doh! I didn't comment on Windows 2002, as I hear slightly

different

plans are afoot - yeah obviously ASP.NET will work on it, but possibly

it

will be integrated?

The main reason why ASP.NET won't work on these platforms, as I

understand

it, is that ASP.NET will run only on IIS 5.0 right? And not PWS/IIS

4.0.

This is why the other platforms are all excluded. You can install .Net

Framework on all these platforms, and .Net framework per se (the CLR

and

other bits and pieces) will work, but it will not be able to server

ASP.NET

pages.

Furthermore, the assertion:

Implies that it will run on Windows ME (since ME is "past 98")...

The original question (and indeed the still the subject line of

this thread) was ".NET on Windows ME?" Chris Sano seems to be

implying that the answer to this question is "yes", which I don't

think to be the case. Windows ME only supports PWS _itself_ by

accident. To say (or to infer) that it'll not only run PWS, but

it'll run aspx pages _over_ that webserver, seems a somewhat

dubious statement. Surely, PWS was never meant to support the

.NET framework? I mean there's being thorough, and all that, but

to spend crucial Beta-time developing code that'll run on a

discontinued Webserver that you could never hope to run an

actual website off, on an operating system that doesn't officially

support that webserver anyway... Hmmm.

It would help if clear and concise answers to these kinds of questions

could be provided. I'm still getting personal mails from people asking

me if ASP 3.0 will run on ISS4 or PWS.

"Yes, it'll install, but you can only develop desktop apps"; "Yes, it'll

install, but it won't install the component updates"; "Yes it'll install,

but it won't actually run";... these are not helpful answers, guys! To know

that I'm going to be sitting here in two or three years time _still_

answering these same questions is _not_ encouraging. I think the consensus

is that if it's got IIS 5, it'll probably run ASP.NET code. However, since

not every learner necessarily knows - well... what IIS even _is_ when

they're starting out - it'd be helpful if a clear list of Operating Systems

with a clear "Yes" or "No" besides them could be provided, and then we

could all just refer these questions to such a list.

Now... In answer to the original question: no, Windows ME will not support

ASP.NET (there - I've said it, if anyone wants to gainsay me on that one,

his name better either be Balmer or Gates - and they'd better bear in mind

that I'll still be quoting them on it, three years hence.)

Now, as for how much of the desktop .NET stuff Windows ME will support, I

don't know, but bear in mind that .NET Beta 2 is still a beta, and ME is

still running the Windows 95 kernel: beta software on a Windows 95 kernel

is _not_ a recipe for happiness, IMO.

Hello

it will be supported on Windows NT 4.0! Here is the link for the FAQ page

which has all the system requirements:

That's not what I hear from your beta group. Yes, they can have it running

on NT 4.0, but they won't have the time to test it fully, so it won't be

released on NT 4.0. I know it was the intention to let it run on all these

platforms, but my contacts tell me this is no longer the case.

ASP.NET will work on all versions of Windows past 98 (including NT 4.0)

running either PWS or IIS.

Chris,

ASP.NET is supported on all breeds of Windows XP, not

just Windows 2002 Server.

Furthermore, the assertion:

|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

|ASP.NET will work on all versions of Windows past 98

| ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

|(including NT 4.0) running either PWS or IIS.

|~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dennis,

Yes, we KNOW what it says on the site, but we have contacts at

Microsoft on the ASP.NET team who assure us, that while it was

originally

the intention to support NT 4.0, that it no longer will be doing this.

This

decision is not fully public knowledge yet, but it will become so.

Thanks for the FYI, Mitch. I didn't realize that support for 98 and NT

had been dropped, but it does make sense.

Chris,

Not with BETA 2. The only platforms supported for hosting

an ASP.NET application are:

	Windows 2000 Professional

	Windows 2000 Server

	Windows 2000 Advanced Server

	Windows 2000 Datacenter Server

	Windows XP Professional

	Windows 2002 Server

	Windows 2002 Advanced Server

	Windows 2002 Datacenter Server

I am not sure about the Windows XP Home Edition, as I

haven't used it OR heard any solid evidence that is

supported. Someone from Microsoft might know more

about that.

According to Scott Guthrie of the ASP.NET team at

Microsoft, they made the decision to drop support

for ASP.NET on Windows NT 4.0 because it placed

an enormous testing load on them which would have

pushed the product release date for V1 out by

too much, and they felt that customers would

appreciate a solid release on Windows 2000/XP

sooner rather than later.

I'll let the guys at Microsoft comment on that. I'm aware .NET works on

Windows NT 4.0, but I believe that it won't reliably serve ASP.NET

pages,

and certainly hasn't and won't be tested properly.

According to Scott Guthrie, a member of the ASP .NET team

"Unfortunately we will not be able to support ASP.NET

deployment on NT4 for V1. While we originally planned

to enable this (and in fact provided limited support for

it in Beta1), we ran into a number of blocking technical

issues in the Beta2 timeframe that prevented us from

accomplishing this."

Chris,

Actually I heard yesterday and read a press release by Microsoft

that they have released what Whistler is actuallying going to

be called:

	Windows.NET!

Not bad eh? Also, the release of Windows.NET is being delayed

after the release of Windows XP. One can only assume to do more

work to make the .NET justified :) Exciting times.
