Who considers Visual Studio the best editor for ASP? Visual Studio for
designing is not anywhere near the quality and ease of use that
Dreamweaver is. With Ultra Dev and now with MX they are giving Microsoft
a run for their money on the programming code side of things too. I use
both tools and like Dreamweaver much more. Though they haven't
incorperated all the xml aspects I would like to see.

I'll second that... and there's a free Wrox PDF about it!

Visual Studio .NET (or the single language versions) are really good too.
They don't give you quite as much control though -- for example Visual
Studio .NET always uses code behinds. If you have Visual Studio .NET already
then I'd try that. If you don't, try Web Matrix -- you may well find it's
exactly what you need.

Hi Aaron,
Can you please tell me the advantages offered by Web Matrix which VS.NET
doesn't?
As far as I know, when I went thru the documentation for Web matrix, it said
that its good for those who are used to work on single asp files i.e without
code behind modules like the traditional ASP pages.

But I want to know if this is good enough to exploit all the features
provided by .NET.

I appreciate any help in advance.

First off it is free, and a great tool for beginners...

If you're simply looking for a gui based tool to build asp.net and save
~$106 US this is it. If you're going to build enterprise aspx apps that
require Intellisence support, Debugging support, Class designer and
library component compilation support, Source control for
multi-developer projects ... And piles more of the vs.net IDE Use the
resources at http://asp.net to make your final decision.

Aaron

In my opinion, aside from price I would not think so.
DreamWeaverMX has many more features than Web Metrix.

Dreamweave MX support more than .NET Cold Fusion, PHP objects and JSP..but
for developing ASP.NET web matrix would be better

I think Microsoft does do a better job in incorperating all the
resources for programming. The solutions explorer is very cool. You have
everything you need right at your finger-tips/mouse-clicks. Dreamweaver
does too, but not as nice as having the class-viewer and everything
right there. I use Dreamweaver more often because I design more. I wish
I could use Dreamweaver's design with Visual Studio's Application
development tools. Maybe I can?

I find DreamWeaverMX is great for most models. However, when in .NET,
nothing beats VS.Net in my opinion. Everything you need is right there.
Perhaps as I get more advanced, my mind will change. However, as of now,
I am doing .NET in VS and everything else in DWMX.

 Hi all,

I did visit the page and managed to download the "webmatrix.msi". Now I have a
silly problem. My PC which is connected to internet is running win98SE. I want
to install this on my other PC running win2k. Has any one in the group managed
to do that. Asp framework is not installed on the PC running win2k either. Could
someone give me step by step direction to install net framework as well as
webmatrix.

TIA

Hi,

Well, that's pretty easy if you have the visual studio .net disks, simply
insert and run the first of the four CD's and the .net framework will
install.

I hope that helps, but I bet it doesn't :o)
