aspx_beginners thread: Configuring Directory Security

Message #1 by "Kim Holman" <onemorecybergeek@y...> on Thu, 12 Dec 2002 18:11:07
Hello,

I am currently reading Beginning ASP.NET 1.0 with C#. My operating system
is Windows XP Professional. On page 42 of the book, there are
instructions for configuing directory security. The book indicates that
write permissions need to be set up for the ASPNET account, in order to
be able to work with an Access database. The directions are to open
Windows Explorer and right-click the directory that holds the application
files and from the Properties dialog to select the Security tab. Here is
my problem. When I right-click the directory to access the Properties
dialog, I have every tab available in the diagram on page 43 EXCEPT the
one I need. I don't have a Security tab. I am the owner and administrator
of the computer I'm working on and I'm logged in as myself. So what do I
need to do to configure the directory security? I appreciate any help you
can offer. I am learning this stuff in order to set up a small Intranet
to connect the members of my department to an Access database, so I
assume this will be a very important step in my process.

Sincerely,
Kim Holman

When you right click on the folder, select properties. In WinXP Pro I think
the tab is called sharing. If you allow users to share the folder, and
modify your files, this should work.

Hi David,

I was able to find the share tab and allows users to share the folder. I
also found the aspnet_wp user account listed under user accounts in the
control panel. It is set up as a Limited Account. I assume I want to keep
it that way. Right? There is the option to make it an administrator
account. Thanks for your help.

Kim

I had this same problem as well. It turned out that by default WinXp has
"Simple Sharing" enabled. In order to get the Security Tab to be
visible, you need to turn off Simple Sharing. You can do so in the
"Tools" | "Folder Options" in the Windows Explorer, and looking under
the Avanced Settings on the View Tab.

Hope this helps.
