Go for ASP.NET,
I experienced faster development with ASP.NET than ASP...
(for example the use of data-bounded grids, validation, GUI, ...)

ASP.NET is fine until you get to stupidly insignificant things. For
example setting the value in a combo box is quite laborious. For fastest
turn round from knowing vbscript asp is the way to go. Asp.net will
create faster systems but I experienced a longer lead time with asp.net
and I have similar experience to you David

ASP.NET is the future so if you have time to deal with the added
complexity of learning to be effective in asp.net, go for it, in a
pinch, asp is easier to get a handle on and deal with.
