Hi ,
I am flattered to be a part of this DISCUSSION GROUP.
Here is my opportunity to say "WHAT I WANT?" rather
than "WHAT I HAVE?"
1. When you read the proposed title "Expert
one-on-one: Oracle Performance by Design", what does
that say to you? Do you like the title? What does it
lead you to expect?
Me : The very first thing that came to my mind when i
read the title was that it has something to do with
Oracle performance, in general. Well about my likeness
of the title, to be very honest, i dont really care
what the title is. As i am aware of TOM's technical
ability and his way of explaining even the toughest
stuff in such a simple way. I already have his
previous book 'Oracle Expert:One on One'. Read it
twice and still find new stuff in it.
My expectation from this new title is :
a) Should have in-depth description of ORACLE
ARCHITECTURE.
b) Importance of each and every component
c) How should we treat ORACLE as database, i mean from
developer point of view and DBA?
d) More importantly, i would like TOM to share his
experience dealing with problems in Oracle.
e) List is endless, human can never be satisfied.
2. The specification should give you a good feel for
Tom's philosophy and the proposed content. What are
your thoughts about the content? Is this the sort of
information you really need? Are there any issues not
covered that you'd like to see or, conversely,
anything you feel is not central to the book theme?
Me : I would like to have DOs and DONTs in every stage
of DATABASE DESIGN, in order to get performance boost.
We are using ORACLE 9i Release 2 in our office project
which is running LINUX. I have installed Orale 9i
Release 2(Windows Edition), which i downloaded from
the INTERNET. I always get the feeling the ORACLE GURU
dont give attention to WINDOWS related issue. I had
few issue in the past OS specific that i couldnt solve
it. I had to upgrade to Release 2. I am regular
visitor of ASKTOM. so i posted my problem, but as i
said WINDOWS RELATED ISSUE is not meant to be
rectified. Anyway thats over now. I would love to hear
what TOM think about it.
3. The style of the book is very different form Tom's
last book. Having looked through Chapter 1, what are
your initial thoughts about it?
Me :I dont agree with you. It depends what do you mean
by "STYLE OF THE BOOK". I assume you are talking
about TOM's way of explaining. First chapter is what
every oracle developer would love to be aware of. Its
always refreshing when an expert like TOM share his
experiences. I read the first draft that i had
downloaded from the provided link. You dont need
to mention the Author name, his way of writing stuff
is so UNIQUE. Its something like 'CREATING UNIQUE
CONSTRAINT IN DATABASE DEFAULT 'TOM' When ever i read
his article or his book, it appears to me like hes
addressing me. I am sure this is just a CURTAIN
RAISER. More interesting and brain twister is yet to
come. I liked the way TOM shares his experience. As i
said i regularly visit his ASKTOM site, i know what
hes talking about.
4. How do you feel about the fact that the book does
rely to some extent on you having read Tom's previous
book? Since the book needs to focus on the "whys and
whens" rather than the "whats", it does make cross-
references to the last book for some of the background
information. For example, in order to focus on when
you should use a particular type of index/table, Tom
has to assume basic knowledge of what each type
is...and this is covered in E1-1 Oracle. Do you feel
that this is acceptable? (We will be making relevant
sections from E1-1 Oracle freely available in
pdf format from the Wrox web site).
Me :Its natural referring to Oracle Expert:One on One
for some explanations. It doesnt make any sense
explain the thing again and again. Also as i have his
previous book. I dont mind if he refers to that for
some explanation. That i way i can have more new stuff
in this title. Its great that WROX is making some
sections available freely. So that means i can
have a SOFT COPY of his previous book. So no need to
carry the book with me all the time.
Best Regards,
