gtkplus_gnome thread: Helix GNOME 1.2 install

Don,

Andrew Polshaw of our Linux team suggests the following:

"You should have a file /etc/inittab. In there it should on the last line
load the X Display Manager if you are in runlevel 5 (or whatever Caldera
uses). On Mandrake it loads a script called prefdm which then reads a file
called /etc/sysconfig/desktop and sees what that contains (KDE, GNOME, or
AnotherLevel) before running either kdm, gdm, or xdm. Examine the scripts
and look at where they point you to and you might be able to work out what
its doing and stop it attempting to run kdm.

As to your rc.gui problem. I would guess that somewhere in init, it is
trying to load this file. Check in inittab, then /etc/rc.d/rc, then
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, and then /etc/rc.d/rc.local. If that fails, try
seeing if there are any files in /etc/rc.d/init.d that look like Caldera
specific initialisation files. (They have caldera in the name), if so,
examine them and see if they load rc.gui."

See if that works.

Subject: Helix GNOME 1.2 install

I have D/L'd and installed Helix GNOME 1.2 on my system. I am running
Caldera 2.4 which uses LILO and a graphical interface to load either Linux
or Windows. When I select Linux it goes thru the system checks and
automatically tries to load KDE but since I have installed GNOME I get
several lines of the following: "/bin/sh: /etc/rc.d/rc.gui: cannot execute
binary file" followed by: "INIT: Id 'gu' respawning too fast: disabled for
5 minutes." Then the system freezes for 5 minutes and it tries it again
with the same error messages.

I can get in to use a vi editor but there is nothing in the rc.gui file
except ^@ on the first line.

1. I need to reconfigure the auto load feature from KDE to GDM and
2. If GNOME is looking for rc.gui then I obviously have a corrupt file and
to somehow get a good one.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Don
